The quickest way: cancel online
Planet Fitness says it finished rolling out online cancellation to all its clubs in May 2025. Log in to your account in the member portal on planetfitness.com and follow the steps to end your membership. You need working login details.
Save the confirmation email or take a screenshot of the confirmation screen. Planet Fitness notes that some policies can vary by location because of state and local rules, so if the option is not there for you, use one of the other ways below.
Cancel in person at your home club
Planet Fitness asks you to go to your home club: the club where you joined, or the one you transferred to. Even with a Black Card, which lets you work out at any club, only your home club ends the membership.
Ask for written confirmation before you leave.
Cancel by mail (with proof)
Planet Fitness accepts "written notification via mail to your home club". It does not require certified mail, but a letter sent by USPS Certified Mail with a return receipt is the only way to show that it arrived and when.
- Write a short letter with your full name, your key tag or barcode number, your home club, and the email or phone on your account.
- Say that you are ending your membership and ask them to stop all charges, including the annual fee.
- Mail it to your home club's street address by Certified Mail with a return receipt.
- Keep the receipt and check your next bank statement.
Planet Fitness deadlines count from when the club receives your letter, not the postmark, so allow several days for delivery.
Deadlines, the annual fee and buyout fees
Monthly dues are drafted on the 17th. Planet Fitness says the club must receive your request by the 10th to stop that month's draft, because billing changes can take up to 7 business days.
The annual fee is billed once a year on a fixed date (at one club we checked: $49, on or shortly after September 1). To stop it, the club must receive your request by the 25th of the month before the annual fee date. The amount and date can differ by club: check your agreement or the billing section of your account.
If your membership has a minimum term and you end it early, Planet Fitness charges a $58 buyout fee. Memberships sold as "No Commitment" can be cancelled at any time without a fee.
Good to know
- Downgrading or changing your plan is a different process from cancelling.
- Billing is usually by EFT from your checking account. Watch your statement after the cancellation date.
- If you moved and use a different club now, check which club is your home club before you send anything.
