Cancel by mail (what LA Fitness recommends)
LA Fitness's FAQ says you can cancel "by mailing written notice of cancellation to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619", and adds: "we recommend registered or certified mail and keeping a record for your files". Send it to the P.O. Box, not to your club.
- Include your full name, your member ID (on your key tag), your club, and the email and phone on your account.
- List every membership, add-on or agreement you want to cancel: LA Fitness treats them separately.
- Mail it by Certified Mail with a return receipt and keep the receipt.
Timing: the 5-business-day rule
LA Fitness says a mailed cancellation postmarked at least 5 business days before your next billing date should stop further billing. If it is postmarked later, you may be billed once more, and LA Fitness says it will refund that extra billing.
If you paid a "last month" when you joined, you keep access through that prepaid month.
Cancel online or at the club
LA Fitness lists cancelling "via your online account" on its website. According to the FTC's complaint, this covers stand-alone agreements, requires a login, and is not available in the mobile app.
In person, the FAQ says to "see the front desk" at a club. Ask for a written receipt.
Fees and term agreements
Most LA Fitness memberships are month-to-month and can be cancelled at any time without a cancellation fee. If you are still inside an initial term of three months or more (membership, personal training or another agreement), the cancellation takes effect when that term ends, or a termination fee applies if you end it earlier. LA Fitness does not publish the amount.
There is also a recurring annual fee. Check its date in your agreement before you time your cancellation.
Why proof matters with LA Fitness
In August 2025 the Federal Trade Commission sued LA Fitness's operator, Fitness International, alleging that it made cancelling difficult and kept billing some members who had cancelled. The case is pending and the allegations are not proven. Either way, a Certified Mail receipt and a delivery record are the strongest proof you can keep.
The same company runs Esporta Fitness, City Sports Club and Club Studio, which have similar but separate instructions.
